Dysport is one of the newer anti-wrinkle treatments to hit the market. It enjoyed success abroad before gaining FDA approval in 2009 for use in the U.S. It shares many of the qualities of Botox with a few modifications that have made it very popular during its short time in America.
What is Dysport?
Dysport is an anti-aging treatment that uses botulinum toxin type A to cause your facial muscles to relax, thereby smoothing out wrinkles. It is the same chemical used in Botox, but in this case the protein is further diluted and injected deeper into the muscles. It blocks neuro-signals that cause your muscles to contract, causing wrinkles in the first place.
How Does Dysport Work?
During the Dysport procedure, your doctor will inject the botulinum toxin type A deep into your wrinkle lines. The procedure is mostly painless, although you will feel pressure as your doctor holds the injection site. Over the course of the next two days, the protein will spread out beneath the surface of your skin, covering a wider area of muscles than Botox. As the fluid is absorbed, your muscles will begin to relax from the inside out, gently smoothing out your skin. The whole procedure can generally be done in less than 30 minutes.
Where Can Dysport Be Injected?
Generally, Dysport injections are placed in the forehead and around the cheeks or nose. Dysport is not typically used in small, thin muscle areas like the corners of the eyes because the protein tends to spread out too far and can't go deep enough. In many cases your doctor will choose to use a combination of Dysport and Botox together to achieve the best possible results with the fewest injections.
Why Should I Get Dysport?
If you've been considering anti-aging injections for a while, Dysport offers a more efficient and cost effective way of getting results. Many patients find that Dysport injections cost less than Botox, but the results are better for large areas that need to be treated. It is useful for treating the forehead and frown lines where you are most likely to have deep creases over a large surface area.
How Long Do Results Last?
You will typically start seeing results of your Dysport treatment within 48 hours. After that, your results will last up to four months before they begin to fade. Your doctor will set you up on a treatment plan to maintain your results long-term by spacing out your injections just enough to keep things looking smooth without waiting too long to start your next treatment.
